From having graduated as the first-ever harpist at the University of New Orleans to being recognized with an award for her outstanding service to their music department to being a student and community leader to garnering over a decade worth of experience teaching music, Ivory’s pioneering achievements, dedication to her art and service to those around her has and continues to be unparalleled.
As an educator, it is Ivory’s intention to empower each one of her students to find their own voice and purpose within their art. From having taught private and group lessons to students of all ages to teaching those with special needs, varied cultural backgrounds and gender identities to providing education using tools such as the piano, harp, band and Orff instruments to creating a safe space for learning and self-expression, Ivory utilizes her array of experience coupled with a uniquely holistic approach and engaging pedagogy to connect with each one of her students on a personalized level.

Working hard at theory.
Ivory McCann is a multi-instrumentalist who began studying music in elementary school. From grades 5-12, she performed in a myriad of ways from concert and symphonic band to marching, stage and jazz band to participating in solo ensemble, being selected for honour bands, and playing in the Northshore Youth and Community Orchestra for a handful of seasons.
In the spring of 2014 with a Bachelor of Arts in Music, Ivory became the first harpist to graduate from the late University of New Orleans. Besides being a pioneer at university, she has also led nonprofit community organizations like the New Orleans Chapter of the American Harp Society, attended and hosted national conferences and competitions, taught workshops, in music schools and privately within her own studio. Ivory also created her own music and dance fusion ensemble called Ivory and the Silk Road Travelers which has performed at festivals and haflas along the Gulf Coast.
With 22+ years invested in her own education, Ivory brings a wealth of knowledge, an array of experiences, and profound wisdom to those seeking guidance on their musical journey.
Ivory grew up playing flute, oboe and saxophone, teaches most band instruments, though by far, piano is the most requested instrument by her students. Beyond one-on-one private lessons, Ivory also offers various types of group classes including duo to small ensemble work for advancing musicians and group recorder for grade school ages. Furthermore, Ivory facilitates specialized education for students seeking to test into talented music at school, earn/maintain first chair status in band, study to try out for parish and state honour band, participate in competitions, and to prepare for and excel at university.
Ivory is Level 1 Orff Schulwerk certified and teaches students of all ages and levels in both private and group classes.
Ivory believes in the power of music, personal expression, and the importance of cultivating and sharing our passions with the world. Ivory teaches music like a language where reading, writing, and speaking music beyond the instrument is as important and quintessential to learning as is performing. Her goal is to help all her students develop well-rounded skills and understanding through music that can be applied to many facets of life.
